A Guinness record rests on the roof of the church of San Antonio in Valencia

The Guinness World Record was achieved thanks to the ingenuity of Francesco Santoro’s assistant, who saw the possibility that he had created an astonishing work of art. Valencia. Through a modest announcement to the congregation, the Catholic community of Prebo in Valencia learned that Francesco Santoro and the Church of San Antonio were listed in the Guinness World Records for creating the largest oil painting by a single person. This distinction, awarded on December 6, 2022, surpassed the previous record held by British artist Sacha Jafri, who created The Journey of Humanity in Dubai in 2020.

Collection of 16 Documents: Saint Raphael Society for the Protection of Italian Immigrants Annual Reports

The Saint Raphael Society for the Protection of Italian Immigrants was founded in July 1890 by Saint Giovanni Battista Scalabrini, at that time Bishop of Piacenza, Italy, and an advocate for Italy’s emigrants. These scans comprise an incomplete run of reports (16) from the Society’s American branches, one report from Boston and the rest from New York, between 1891 and 1922, after which the National Catholic Welfare Conference took over the Society’s work of assisting Italian immigrants arriving on American shores. Reports may contain statistics, images of immigrants cared for by the Society with data about them, and/ or text describing the Society’s work. Taken together they reports detail hands-on care of immigrants passing through Ellis Island in the early twentieth century.

Collection of 131 Documents: American Committee on Italian Migration

The American Committee on Italian Migration operated from 1952 to 2000. It drew its leadership from the Society of Saint Charles-Scalabrinians and its membership from Italian immigrants and Italian Americans interested in immigration. It worked to reform U.S. immigration law, and was particularly involved in the 1965 Immigration Act and the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act. It also assisted Italian immigrants with Italian and American legal paperwork. Women were especially important in the organization as event-holders and fundraisers. The collection still speaks to immigration issues, the development of ethnic communities over time.

Collection of 37 Documents. National Catholic Welfare Conference Bureau/ Department of Immigration Annual Reports

The National Catholic Welfare Conference was created in 1922 to facilitate the American Catholic hierarchy’s collaboration on issues that crossed diocesan borders. It included an office called the Bureau of Immigration from 1922 to 1952, and the Department of Immigration beginning in 1953. The office’s first director, who served for the entire run of these annual reports, was a layman, Bruce Mohler. Mohler’s annual reports summarized how his office met its responsibilities for keeping a Catholic eye on immigration law and policies in Washington and for supervising field offices in New York Harbor and in El Paso. These copies of the reports are from a deposit from the New York field office. It is missing 1925-1926, 1936-1937, 1937-1938, and 1961-1962, and some copies are carbon typescripts, impeding searchability. However, the collection remains a useful introduction to the office’s work and an important perspective on US immigration.

“I am humbled to be named Bishop of Charleston and look forward to serving the people of South Carolina,” said Bishop-elect Fabre. “As shepherd, it is my hope to work together to strengthen our Church and project God’s love to all who we encounter.” Bishop-elect Fabre was born on Nov. 13, 1955, in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. He immigrated to New York City while in high school and completed his secondary education. He joined the order of the Missionaries of St. Charles and took his first vows in 1982. Four years later, on Oct. 10, 1986, he was ordained to the priesthood in Brooklyn, NY. “As Bishop of Charleston, it has been a pleasure to serve the faithful in South Carolina. Together, we have served the less fortunate, developed new programs, opened additional schools and outreach centers, and built new churches,” said Bishop Guglielmone. “There is so much more to be done and I’m more than confident that Bishop-elect Fabre will serve our diocese well in the upcoming years.”
